Reflecting on GIGweek24: A Summer of Inspiration and Collaboration

As summer began, GIGweek24 brought together some members of GIG’s vibrant community for a week of creativity and collaboration that set the tone for the season.

Now, as summer winds down, we look back on that dynamic experience with fresh perspectives and renewed energy. This newsletter offers a detailed recap of the key moments from GIGweek24, highlighting the collective insights and connections that shaped the event.

Collaborating with re:publica24: Co-Creating the Makerspace and Beyond

GIGweek24 kicked off with our participation in the 3-day re:publica Berlin 2024 festival. This year’s festival focused on care work, broadly interpreting the theme to cover various societal issues. The motto, “Who Cares?”, was designed to address the growing need for care in response to global crises such as ongoing conflicts and climate change. It also questioned our digital dependencies, sparking discourse on how we can better respond to these challenges.
The Makerspace, curated and coordinated by GIG, served as a vibrant hub for creative minds. Over three days, GIG members led 20 sessions in the Makerspace, alongside 5 meetups, 3 conference sessions, and 2 offstage sessions. You can read more about the Makerspace experience in "We Care, So We Make" blog post and explore the highlights through our YouTube Playlist featuring videos from GIGers at re:publica24.

One of the key sessions was “Right to Repair” discussion, to which you can find a recording in the playlist linked above. The first half of the session features the German Minister being interviewed by Geraldine.

GIG Community Day: Exploring Berlin's Makerspaces

Following re:publica24, we held a GIG Community Day, touring various makerspaces in Berlin, including Junge TĂĽftler and HILO Studio. Participants engaged with the hosts, explored the spaces, and participated in collaborative, creative discussions. It was a day filled with inspiration and hands-on learning. You can find social media recaps of all event days on our Linktree.

The Power of Networks: GIG's 2-Day Conference

The theme of this year’s GIGweek24 conference, “The Power of Networks”, highlighted the importance of strong connections in an increasingly interconnected world. Over two days, workshops, roundtables, and presentations delved into how networks can drive social, economic, and technological advancements. Here’s a look at some of the sessions:
  • Day 1 Highlights: The first day featured 8 workshops, including "The Power of Networks," "Knowledge Sharing Platforms," and "Way Beyond ChatGPT". Each session fostered rich discussions on leveraging networks for impactful change. Explore the special youtube playlist on the MiR 1st meet-up with mAkE for more details.
  • Day 2 Highlights: The second day continued with 8 more workshops and GIG’s General Assembly. Sessions like "AI in Grassroots Innovation" and "Humanitarian Response: Maker Support for Gaza" explored the role of technology in community-driven change. Closing GIGweek24: A Time for Reflection and Connection

The “Power of Networks” conference concluded with a dinner at MOOS Space, where participants enjoyed final conversations and reflections over French cuisine. It was a fitting end to a week that embodied the spirit of GIG: collaboration, innovation, and community.
