Exploring Circular Economy Innovations: The SCoPE Initiative in Lomé

The SCoPE project, led by L’Africaine d’architecture and implemented at Woelab in Lomé, Togo, aims to tackle plastic waste issues by creating a circular economy model. Supported by the Stiftung Nord-Süd-Brücken and the Global Innovation Gathering, this initiative represents a collaborative effort to innovate waste management practices. Through the project, plastic waste is collected, sorted, shredded, and transformed into functional items, providing a practical solution to a persistent environmental problem.

Co-creating for sustainability

At the heart of the initiative is the construction and use of the Precious Plastic Machine. Developed in partnership with San3a Tech from Cairo, Egypt, this machine allows for recycling plastic waste into new products. The project’s design emphasizes community participation, with workshops conducted to educate individuals on the recycling process and the machine’s operation. These efforts aim to instil sustainable practices within the community and inspire broader adoption.

A key aspect of the SCoPE initiative is its focus on inclusivity and accessibility. Rather than selling the recycled products, the project distributes them free of charge within the community. This approach ensures that the project’s benefits reach a wider audience while fostering a culture of recycling. The developed SCoPE mobile application has also facilitated interactions with households and small businesses, streamlining plastic waste collection and enhancing community engagement.

Collaboration has been vital to the project’s success. Partners from various regions have contributed expertise, resources, and training to enhance its impact. San3a Tech’s visit to Woelab and the involvement of local and international stakeholders highlight the importance of knowledge-sharing in addressing global challenges. By integrating diverse perspectives, SCoPE sets a precedent for collaborative environmental initiatives.

The measurable impacts of the initiative include the collection and recycling of 300 kilograms of plastic waste, as well as the creation of jobs within the community. It has also fostered an ecosystem of makerspaces and environmental organizations to promote responsible waste management. These outcomes align with Sustainable Development Goals related to sustainable cities, responsible consumption, and climate action, showcasing the broader relevance of the project.

While the project has achieved significant milestones, it has also identified areas for improvement. Future stages will prioritize adjustments in resource allocation and infrastructure. These lessons emphasize the importance of flexibility and responsiveness in implementing community-driven projects. Despite challenges, the initiative has laid a strong foundation for sustainable waste management in Lomé.

SCoPE exemplifies how localized initiatives can contribute to global sustainability efforts. By integrating community involvement, technological innovation, and international collaboration, the project addresses the immediate issue of plastic waste and fosters a culture of sustainability. As SCoPE continues to evolve, its lessons and practices generate potential for replication in similar contexts worldwide.

The support from Stiftung Nord-Süd-Brücken has been instrumental in the SCoPE initiative’s success. This partnership has enabled the team at Woelab to access crucial resources and expertise necessary for implementing innovative solutions to plastic waste management in Togo. By fostering connections between local and international stakeholders, Stiftung Nord-Süd-Brücken has enhanced the initiative’s capacity to drive systemic change within the community. Their commitment to fostering sustainable development in collaboration with grassroots organizations underscores the importance of supportive networks in tackling environmental challenges, and furthermore highlights how meaningful partnerships can amplify the impact of local initiatives and create lasting benefits for communities, ultimately reinforcing the significance of global support in achieving sustainable development goals.
