This month, we’re excited to share major updates from across the GIG community, including the launch of new funds, international events, and collaborations that highlight the power of innovation. From the QBO Innovation Hub’s Filipino startup fund to the upcoming Africa Makerspace Gathering, our network continues to expand its impact on a global scale.

In our Community Spotlight, we’re proud to introduce GIG members and share the latest achievements from across the network, including the first recordings of our AI Series. General and Project Updates From the GIG Community and Team Members ✨

Africa Makerspace Gathering 2024

Excitement is building for the Africa Makerspace Gathering, which will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, on 12 & 13 November 2024. Following the Afrilabs Annual Gathering, the event offers a dedicated platform for makerspaces to collaborate with governments and foundations to promote SDGs and strengthen the makerspace network. Supported by the mAkE project that strengthens the African European Maker Innovation Ecosystem, GIG members and staff will join the event and create the final iteration of the “Maker in Residency” program around the event days. We’re looking forward to meeting many of you at the event!

LibreWater Pilot in Iraq

GIG supports Open Hardware Solar Desalination that can be manufactured and innovated locally in Makerspaces across the world. GIG community members LibreWater and Science Camp are working to transfer their prototype for water purification to real-life scenarios in water-stressed areas, with plans for field tests. GIG is hosting the project thanks to support by the Roddenberry Foundation - keep an eye out for future news pieces on this project.

QBO Innovation Hub Launches Filipino Startup Fund

The QBO Innovation Hub, a pioneering public-private startup platform, founded by GIG member Jay Fajardo in the Philippines, has announced a new fund to support local startups. This initiative aims to drive innovation and growth in the Filipino startup ecosystem.

Conference on the Future of Cities in Berlin

Since one year, GIG has been a member of BER – the network of Berlin based organizations working in development cooperation. At this year's "BER conference 24/7" – Towards a Globally Just Berlin – Transforming the City Together” on 20th September 2024, a pilot City partnership project between Berlin, Windhuk, Mexico-City and Jakarta was introduced and aims to support civil society organisations in the four cities. Team member Janina was also impressed by the work of the indigenous Munduruku community from Brazil. Their representatives discussed climate justice and partnership work. They shared the impact of the climate crisis and resource extraction on human rights and territories and spoke about how Brazil and Europe can work together to protect the Amazon and human rights.

After every GIGweek and re:publica, we go through the longest nomination and onboarding process of the year. This is when we meet and get introduced to the highest number of great people throughout these events!

  1. Individuals Can Become Supporting Members for as little as 30 EUR per year. However, the organization encourages a higher annual donation depending on the individual's means.
  2. Organizations Can Become Supporting Members starting with a donation of 300 EUR per year. This fee is suggested for organizations with less than 50 employees and/or have an annual budget of less than 1 million EUR. Organizations with more than 50 employees and/or have an annual budget of more than 1 million EUR are encouraged to donate a minimum of 3000 EUR per year.
