Last week, our consortium of nine partners gathered in Brussels to kick off this exciting initiative that will unfold over the next three years.

What is Make-a-thek all about? ♻️💡
|
Make-a-thek – officially titled "Modular Library Makerspaces for Heritage Crafts Innovation and Digitization" – aims to transform public spaces into inclusive, accessible hubs for innovation and sustainability. By developing and testing frameworks and services for circular economies in public libraries, this project will create spaces where local communities can access tools and resources for exploring eco-friendly approaches to fashion and crafts across Europe and beyond.

What makes this special is how it blends traditional crafts with modern digital tools—helping preserve cultural knowledge while promoting sustainability through new technologies.

Over the next three years, we will:

Democratise innovation access by equipping public libraries with modular, replicable makerspaces and open educational resources.

Build sustainable communities by connecting craftspeople, makers, and fashion experts with local citizens.

Foster sustainability through innovation by blending traditional craft knowledge with digital technologies.

Together, we'll establish at least 12 modular makerspaces within public libraries — 9 in Europe and 3 beyond—creating a network of innovation hubs aligned with the principles of the New European Bauhaus: sustainability, inclusion, and aesthetics.
