Strengthening the Europe-Africa Digital Ecosystem Through Increased R&I Cooperation (SEADE)

About the project

The SEADE project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme, is dedicated to strengthening the digital ecosystem between Europe and Africa through enhanced Research and Innovation (R&I) cooperation. Implemented by a consortium of African and European institutions, with Hapa Space and the Association of African Universities representing Ghana, the project focuses on ensuring that innovations transition from research outcomes to tangible, impactful products and services accessible to a broader market.

To date, SEADE has successfully designed and submitted a comprehensive human-centred research strategy. The project has also completed a needs assessment of R&IID (Research, Innovation, and Industrial Development) actors across its pilot regions and is currently in the midst of analyzing the gathered data. These efforts are paving the way for targeted interventions that will strengthen the R&I ecosystem in Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, and Senegal.

In line with its objectives, SEADE is organizing a series of Soft Landing, Learning Expeditions, and Capacity Building initiatives. In Ghana, these initiatives will focus on smart cities and upskilling women and youth, with similar programs planned for Senegal, Kenya, and South Africa. The preliminary findings from the R&IID ecosystem research were recently presented at the AUDA-NEPAD event in Addis Ababa, reflecting SEADE’s commitment to contributing to the African Union-EU Innovation Agenda.

Central to SEADE’s strategy is the Enrich in Africa platform, which serves as a key connector for European and African R&I efforts. By aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) pertinent to digital innovation and entrepreneurship, SEADE is poised to make a significant impact on digital transformation and sustainable development across the African continent.
