Twende is a social innovation center and NGO based in Arusha, Tanzania with a satellite centre in Orkolili, Kilimanjaro that helps diverse groups of people design and create technology to solve problems in their communities. Through hands-on training, access to a maker space, and technical mentorship, Twende supports both inexperienced and experienced innovators to create targeted, useful, and affordable technology for local communities. The organization works with people of all backgrounds, including students, farmers, women’s groups, and small entrepreneurs, and has engaged over 5,930 participants in 150+ programs across 4 Tanzanian regions. Twende’s work has impacted over 75,000 people and helped 500+ innovators build income-generating technologies. The organization’s name, Twende, means “let’s go” in Swahili.
