The Global Innovation Gathering, Fashion Revolution Germany and Circular Fashion Foundation in Poland hosted a session as part of the Make-a-thek community calls. They shared insights and facilitated discussion on collective action, encouraging the audience to explore the origins and objectives of the Fashion Revolution movement.
The movement began after a 2013 building collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which caused significant loss of life and injuries. In response, designers and researchers established the organisation to address unsafe working conditions, insufficient oversight, and labour exploitation in production chains. Initially, the campaign launched as a media initiative to encourage questions about the origins of apparel and promote transparency. It has since grown into a global movement active in seventy countries.
Fashion Revolution encourages collective action, inviting those with shared goals to amplify their impact. The aim is to unite diverse voices to drive systemic change, building on previous campaigns.
Through the make-a-thek project, libraries support these goals by serving as community hubs and circular fashion makerspaces, hosting activities such as apparel exchanges and discussions that foster collaboration. As part of the project, Fashion Revolution also conducts hands-on workshops in libraries to engage librarians, NGOs, and participants of all ages. On courses that vary from organising interactive events to sourcing resources collaboratively.
The Circular Fashion Foundation in Poland also uses gamification with a youth audience, inviting participants to collaborate in activities that identify materials and examine their global impact. This approach motivates students to create actively, deepens learning, and highlights the value of interactive engagement.
Relying on grants and partnerships with institutions such as the Goethe-Institut and the European Commission, this model expands access to educational resources, supports community engagement, and adapts services based on public feedback. Success depends on aligning initiatives with public needs. These community activations depend on individual commitment, which increases volunteer participation, strengthens networks, and encourages more local initiatives. Efforts differ, but success is always closely tied to participants’ dedication.

Despite these efforts, disparities in funding and awareness remain between production centres and consumer markets, limiting access to equipment, training, and visibility in some areas. For example, regions in the southern hemisphere face harsh conditions and limited resources. Addressing these gaps requires education to build local capacity and policy changes for fairer resource distribution. To address these needs, the development strategy includes translating materials into multiple languages and improving accessibility. Organisations also advise governments on textile frameworks to inform policy and aim to expand networks to strengthen collaboration.
